Chapter Twelve

I lifted my shirt just an inch and revealed my new pump, which was attached to my person with a tube and clipped to my shorts. Felix, Killian, and I gathered by my car before walking the length of the parking lot to the front of the school. It had been several days since Killian and I had gone patrolling, and we hadn’t spoken since, but today, we all casually greeted each other, and I pretended that everything was fine. Because I wanted it to be.

“Look at you!” Felix commented with excitement. “When did you get that?”

“Just yesterday afternoon.”

“You’re practically bionic now.” Felix laughed and gave me a high five.

Killian stared at it for a moment and then met my eyes with an uneasy smile. “What’s the benefit of that?” he asked thoughtfully, though Felix elbowed him, probably for being a downer.

“I don’t have to stick myself a bunch every day or inject myself. It keeps my levels up and will alert me if they get low or the batteries are low…you get it. It just helps me have to keep up with less, I guess. At least that’s what I’m hoping.”

“Like I said, bionic,” Felix teased, keeping things light and positive.

“I really don’t think you’re using that word right.” Killian gave Felix a side-eye look, and Felix pretended to be shocked and pointed between all three of us. We all erupted in laughter as we reached the lobby.

Once inside, we saw Nate leaning against the wall, waiting on me or us, I couldn’t be sure. But the boys cleared out quickly, leaving me alone in the hall with Nate, which I would give them fighting words about at track.

Nate asked to walk me down the hall toward my locker, and I tried hard to remember Dad’s words about not being too hard on him. Where was Felix when I needed him?

“Hey,” he said with caution.

“Hi,” I answered flatly.

“I know maybe you’re not ready to talk, but I just need to apologize. If you’ll let me.”

I closed my locker and adjusted my backpack. Felix and I could have campaigned for better lockers this year, but we’d decided our dark corner suited us just fine. It seemed like years since that first time I’d met Nate in the gym or since the night of the dance.

“Follow me,” I said without any feeling.

I led him down the back staircase that no one really used because it just led outside but also down to the boiler room. I stopped on the landing after the first set of stairs and turned to face him.

“Say what you need to say, but don’t expect anything from me.”

“Fair enough.”

I folded my arms and leaned on the wall with my shoulder.

“I reacted badly the other night. I yelled, and I shouldn’t have. I wanted to ask you to forgive me. Forgive me for not hearing you. For getting angry and for being disrespectful.”

I stood stoically against the wall, stunned at his mature apology and remembering Dad’s words about honorable intentions.
